Panama is a country in Middle America, bordering the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean with a tropical maritime climate. It lies between Colombia and Costa Rica, bordering Colombia for 225 kilometers and Costa Rica for 330 kilometers. It also borders the coastline for a total of 2,490 km. The area of Panama is slightly smaller than South Carolina, with a total area of 78,200 km2 between land and ocean. It has a land area of 75,990 km2, and a water area of 2,210 km2 on the coastline. Panama has a tropical maritime climate, which means the weather is hot, humid, and cloudy. The country has a prolonged rainy season (May-January) and a short dry season (January-May). There is a much higher average rainfall on the Atlantic coast than the Pacific coast. The interior of the terrain is mostly steep, rugged mountains and dissected, upland plains. The coastal area has a terrain of plains and rolling hills. Panama City, the capital of Panama, is right next to the Panama Canal. The canal is one of the largest features Panama has to offer, allowing them to fish and transport goods, and a large source of their income comes from the river. Panama, while not varying much overall, still has some extremes in elevation. The lowest elevation is 0 meters, in the Pacific Ocean, and the highest point is Volcán de Barú, at 3,475 meters. Panama is also home to a large habitat of animals. This is because of the diverse climate throughout, ranging from cold in the mountaintops to hot and humid in the forests. As a result of the heavy rainfall on the Caribbean, this is cause for many tropical rainforests. This makes the eastern side of Panama and the forests very hot and humid. Because of this, between all the rainforests and dry plains, there is a space for all animals that inhabit Panama. Overall, Panama is a very neutral country with not much variation and lots of rain. However, the climate makes it very habitable for animals and people alike.
